About Lawanda
I built my life in Southeastern Wisconsin by stepping up early and never stepping back. As the oldest sibling in a family navigating mental health challenges and disability, I became a caregiver while still a teenager. I learned firsthand how fragile stability can be and how critical strong neighborhood systems are. Those experiences did not just shape my values. They shaped my life’s work.
I earned my degree in psychology from UW–Milwaukee while working as a CNA to put myself through school. I later became a care coordinator and lead care coordinator, working alongside families facing complex challenges and helping them find real, workable solutions. I went on to earn a Master’s in Community Psychology from Alverno College, strengthening my commitment to empowerment, equity, and systems that truly serve people.
In 2018, I founded LIFE Wellness and Counseling Services, an outpatient mental health and substance use clinic providing community-based care. Every day, I work with families navigating mental health challenges, housing stress, caregiving responsibilities, and rising costs. I do not observe these struggles from a distance. I see their impact on real households every day.
As a homeowner in District 61 for more than eight years, I understand the pride and responsibility that come with maintaining a home, paying property taxes, and investing in a neighborhood’s future. I moved here with a dream to build a good quality of life as a new homeowner, business owner, and caregiver. Like many of you, I have felt the pressure of rising costs year after year, from property taxes and housing expenses to healthcare, utilities, and groceries, all while balancing work, family, and long term planning.
I also see the challenges facing emerging adults who are working to establish careers, pay off student debt, afford rent or a first home, and decide whether Wisconsin is a place where they can build a future. Strong districts do not just retain residents. They create opportunity for the next generation to stay, grow, and contribute.
District 61 is home to seniors aging in place, families putting down roots, emerging adults building their futures, renters, homeowners, and small business owners. We may come from different generations and backgrounds, but we share common concerns: affordability, safety, access to care, and whether this district will remain a place we can afford to stay.
I am running not for politics as usual, but to represent District 61 with competence, fairness, principles, and care.
