Leadership That Understands our Neighborhood's Needs

Across Every Neighborhood, Every Street, Every Family

IMG_4532.jpeg

"District 61 deserves leadership that speaks to the real challenges people face every day, not slogans, not politics, and not half-measures.

Families here are juggling safety concerns, affordable housing pressures, mental health challenges, rising costs, and the stress that comes when systems feel fragmented or unresponsive.

These issues are deeply connected. When one part of our community's wellbeing suffers, it ripples outward, affecting schools, homes, employers, and public safety.

My approach is rooted in real-world experience and a commitment to measurable
results for every resident of District 61."

Public Safety & Crime Reduction

Too many neighbors in District 61 live with fear of break-ins, blight, violent crime, or slow emergency response times. Public safety is the foundation that allows families to thrive, students to learn, and businesses to grow.

Safety is a right, not a privilege. Law enforcement and first responders must have the support, training, and tools they need to do their jobs effectively. When crime happens, residents must see accountability and swift justice.

But we must also be honest: enforcement alone doesn't build safety.

Lawanda's Focus

  • Reliable police and emergency response

  • Clear accountability for crime

  • Prevention strategies that reduce repeat offenses

  • Neighborhood partnerships that build trust and shared responsibility

Everyone Deserves to Feel Safe in their homes, on their streets, and in their schools

Mental Health & Healthcare Access

Public Safety That Prevents Crisis and Care People Can Actually Access

Mental health and substance use challenges affect families across District 61 every day, not just during emergencies. When care is hard to access, unaffordable, or fragmented, manageable issues escalate into crises. This leads to repeated emergency calls, unnecessary strain on first responders, disrupted families, and higher long-term costs for everyone. Too many residents face long waitlists, limited provider availability, insurance barriers, and out-of-pocket costs that delay care until problems become severe.

As a mental health professional, I've seen firsthand what happens when people can't get help early. Delayed or disconnected care doesn't just harm individuals. It impacts families, schools, workplaces, and public safety systems. This is not about excusing harmful behavior. It's about building systems that prevent crisis before it happens, reduce repeat emergencies, and allow law enforcement and emergency responders to focus on true public safety needs. Accessible, affordable mental health care is one of the most effective prevention tools we have.

I will fight for:

  • Ensure timely, affordable access to mental health and substance use services

  • Reduce wait times and insurance barriers that delay care

  • Improve coordination between healthcare providers, crisis services, and public safety systems

  • Invest in community-based care that meets people where they are

Preventing crisis is not only compassionate. It is smart, effective public safety policy.

Housing Stability & Neighborhood Safety

Strong Housing Builds Safe, Connected Neighborhoods

Housing costs are rising across District 61, affecting both renters and homeowners. Families are facing higher rents, limited affordable options, rising property taxes, insurance increases, and maintenance costs that make staying housed more difficult each year. Housing instability leads to frequent moves, neighborhood turnover, and weakened connections. These conditions increase stress and calls for service.

Stable housing is one of the strongest predictors of neighborhood safety and well-being. When residents can remain in their homes: neighborhoods are more connected, crime is reduced, schools are more stable, and public safety systems are less strained. Housing stability supports safer blocks, stronger families, and healthier neighborhoods.

I will champion housing strategies that:

  • Support long-term neighborhood stability

  • Protect renters from unfair displacement

  • Help homeowners stay in their homes

  • Expand affordable housing options without pushing residents out

  • Strengthen neighborhood cohesion and investment

Housing stability is not separate from public safety; it is a cornerstone of it.
